A fine day for a walk onto Carn Ffoi on Carningli Mountain.
We set off at 10am with our camera and a rucksack of snacks and drinks, just the two of us today so a great chance to explore parts of this rocky outcrop that our youngest is probably best kept safe from for the time being.
We passed through a herd of cows with their young and then passed a team of wild ponies grazing between the gorse and heather. My son asked why Carn Ffoi is also known as the Sleeping Giant and I pointed out the features that make these rocky outcrops appear in the form a lying down person from certain angles.
As we climbed higher onto the rocky outcrops the views over the north Pembrokeshire coast became more spectacular. This is a great spot for seeing the coast from Fishguard in the West all the way accross to Morfa Head behind Newport Sands beach.
After a good explore around the three crags that make up Carn Ffoi we headed south and further up the mountain side to another cluster of rocky outcrops. These are known as Carnedd Fychan and are much smaller in size to those of Carn Ffoi.
The views of the bay from here are even more spectacular and you get a great sense of height as the climb from Carn Ffoi is quite steep but well worth the effort.
After a quick snack and a cold drink we decided to head back down but not before spotting a sailing boat in the distance in the mouth of Aber Rhigian – a small cove to the west of Newport which is accessed via the coast path or the footpath off the A487 en-route to Dinas Cross.
