Sychpant Woods and Picnic Area
Tranquility, beauty and views.
Situated in the beautiful Gwaun Valley are Sychpant Woods and Picnic Area.
They are positioned on the Northern side of the Gwaun Valley and have numerous walks to follow, either up onto Carningli Mountain or through the lower part of the woods.
There is a small car park which can accommodate about 15 cars and a peaceful picnic area with benches and a small pond.
Follow the path at the back of the picnic area to the left (less of a steep climb than to the right) and keep heading uphill for a spectacular view of the Gwaun Valley and the Preseli Hills stretching off in to the distance.
Be sure to look out for Buzzards, Red Kite and if you are lucky a Kestrel or two.
From the view point you can head uphill through a newly planted woodland and eventually come out on the Southern side of Carningli Mountain or follow the path to the right (down hill) to either return to the picnic area and car park or some 50 metres or so down the right hand path you can turn left and follow the path over the wooden bridge which passes by the Christian Retreat (in case you noticed the wooden cross on the hillside above the viewpoint).
Points to note:
- The picnic area is a great place for children to play but please note with anywhere that harbours streams and ponds that care and supervision should be at the front of all parents/guardians minds.
- The walk to the view point is very steep in places and the footpath can be rough and stony in sections.
- The woodlands, paths, car park and picnic area are maintained by the Pembrokeshire National Park (PNP half day Sychpant walk) and there is no charge for using any of the amenities. Leaflets are available around the picnic area, please do read one to better understand why Sychpant is an important area.
