Pwllgwaelod
Perfect sunset beach
This is one of our favourite beaches near Newport - we've spent many an evening here, watching the sunsets, followed by the ferry coming in to berth at Goodwick harbour.
Pwllgwaelod is just 4 miles from Newport, hidden away along a small road off the A487 main road en-route to Fishguard.
There is a small car park, a pub / restaurant, and some public loos at Pwllgwaelod, you can also access the coastal path towards Fishguard or Newport, or take the National Trust circular walk around Dinas Island for some of the most spectacular coastal scenery you will encounter in North Pembrokeshire.
The beach here is sandy and flanked by high cliffs on both sides. Swimming is reasonably safe as there are no underwater shelves for quite some distance from the shore, and we've never experienced any difficult currents.
As we've mentioned before, the sunsets here are sublime, we like to sit high on the steep grassy bank watching the sun sink into the Irish Sea, and at the right time of the year, you'll catch the ferry from Ireland coming around the Strumble Head headland in a blaze of golden reds and oranges.
